Method
Tracer Gas Testing
A safe gas mixture traces leaks through voids and buried lines.
A tracer gas mixture is introduced into a line or void and detected as it escapes, which locates leaks in places acoustics cannot reach, including some buried and concealed runs.
How it works
- System isolated and prepared for testing
- Gas introduced at a controlled point
- Detection along the route to find the escape
Limits, stated plainly
- Requires suitable line conditions and ventilation
- Not suitable for all pipe materials and systems
- Performed with appropriate safety controls

Quick answers
Is Tracer Gas Testing invasive?
No. The method works from surfaces and accessible points; if a small access point is needed to confirm a finding, it is discussed before anything is opened.
Can Tracer Gas Testing be used on its own?
Tracer Gas Testing is strongest when paired with a confirming method. Findings are only reported once verified, which is why single-method clues are labelled as such.
